I may suggest that not every single team in the world has the same priorities. And not every single team in the world can have every single good young player.

I suppose actually I may have been a little disingenuous. To replace Reid directly won't be that easy. But more from the position of a settled person, up to speed on what the PL is all about with good experience.

I was really looking at it from ability and technical side. Reid is avery good defender, no doubt. But I honestly believe there are players in and around Europe who are just as good. And should not really be beyond us.

Re: Reid
i see mate, i agree i dont think its easy to find quality centrebacks at the moment, not for anything that looks like value anyway. but we arent football managers or scouts and we dont have the global or europe wide knowledge that they do. for instance nobody on here would have heard of diafra sakho and maybe a few people were wondering why we were spending 3.5m on an unknown player. but he wasnt unknown to people within football. there could be lots of players that can replace reid, but you are right that people on here wont have the knowledge to say those replacements are out there.

I don't think I answered my own question. In fact my question was about the logic shown by other posters who suggest that Reid could be easily replaced and yet so many top Premier League clubs have struggled to recruit decent Centre Backs. If we can easily find a replacement why can't they.

Point taken that interest in him may turn out to be speculation.

Re: Reid
We shall see when he is gone. I am willing to be wrong :-) but I think we will also see that Reid has improved as part of being under a manager and management team that know how to organise a defence.

Ok this year our goals conceded is looking a bit average but we still look defensively stronger and more organised / solid than almost every West Ham team since the likes of Alvin and Gale, Rieper and Bllic were around. IMHO.

Of course, like I say, Reid may prove me completely wrong and become the new Vidic at some top club but I highly doubt it. I reckon he is more likely to mirror Steven Caulker's career when he leaves.

Re: Reid
monk we dont know if they are going after reid or not, only time will tell. but you have answered your own question there, if there are so many replacement in europe then why reid? well because he is proven in the premierleague and is free.

Monk~koknee 9:32 Fri Jan 16
Re: Reid
And if there are so many young and better options to replace him arund Europe why are not Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Spurs etc. signing then rather than going after Reid?

I understand why you might say that about Reid but the point is who are you comparing him to that the Top 4 currently have. It is due to the dearth of quality centre backs that he is in demand.

The responsibility of most CB's is to defend first and then to give it to the closest midfielder as an outlet. The problem at West Ham is that when the CB gives to a midfielder he invariably gets it straight back and has to resort to the panic clearance.

Agree he is no Beckenbauer but then who is?

"He is replaceable if the scouting / recruitment team continue to do a good job like they did last Summer."

Fucking right. There are several young, talented centre backs playing in Europe which we could get. All currently better techincal players than him. I love Winston but I won't be losing sleep over him going. He isn't that good.

Sir Alf 9:23 Fri Jan 16
Re: Reid
He does not have the technical ability to play for a top 4 club. By that I mean passing / distribution. He has improved that part of his game but his natural instinct is to lump it and accuracy is hit and miss.

He is replaceable if the scouting / recruitment team continue to do a good job like they did last Summer. Its one area of the team even BFS can be trusted to get a good replacement for. Even when we were scraping around in the bargain bin he got Faye who, although only a short term gap filler, did a fine job at CB.

Reid will regret the move from a footballing perspective (assuming he cares) but not a financial perspective which is his and his agents primary motivation. Understandable if short term thinking is all you have.

Re: Reid
IMO All the links to Tottenham are being generated by Reid's agent to force Arsenal's hand now or improve the offer in the summer.

If he doesn't go to Arsenal (possibly Man Utd) he will stay here.

Doubt Spurs will top our offer - and wont give him Euro Championship either

Re: Reid
Former football agent Barry Silkman believes West Ham have seven days to tie down central defender Winston Reid to a new contract.

The New Zealand international’s future at Upton Park is in doubt with a host of potential suitors, including Arsenal and Manchester United, all linked with the defender in the January transfer window.

And with Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for up to three months through injury, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could turn to the 26-year-old in an attempt to sure up his defence.

However, Silkman told talkSPORT he is unsure as to whether Reid has the type of qualities that the longest serving Premier League manager would be looking for.

Speaking on Kick-Off, Silkman said: “If he doesn’t sign the new deal [with West Ham] in the next seven days then he won’t be signing.

“He’s a really, really good player. How good can he help a team get into the Champions League remains to be seen.

“His best position is as a central defender. When he played for New Zealand he played right of the three centre halves so half like a right back and half as a centre half.

“The qualities that he hasn’t got is to get forward and join in with the play, which in modern day football, your full backs have to get forward.

“He’s an excellent defender, he’s an excellent blocker of shots, but he is not a player who will come out of the back and play.

“Arsenal have to start getting defenders who defend. It’s all well having defenders who can pass the ball but they have to be able to defend.”
